Punishment for theft Whoever commits theft shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to three years, or with fine, or with both. [Chapter 17: offences against property theft]

Example: A person who commits theft may be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to three years, or with fine, or with both. In a real FIR or trial, investigators must show that the facts match the ingredients of the offence (intent, act, and other elements as applicable) under Section 379.
